A unique ice skating rink is now open at an unlikely site in Omaha — the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The outdoor rink is open to the public and is part of UNMC’s student plaza.
UNMC chancellor Dr. Harold Maurer says the rink will be a welcome addition to the hospital campus. Dr. Maurer says, “The ice rink will provide fun-filled moments for the students, the staff, the children and others to reduce their stress and enjoy life.”
Andrew Klutman, a medical student at UNMC and vice president of the Student Senate, says the rink will quickly become important to students. Klutman says: “We must do things to keep our batteries charged, ways to let go and keep our sanity here. I think the ice skating rink and the plaza are going to be great ways to do that.”
Klutman says the rink was made possible by a gift from Omaha philanthropists Ruth and Bill Scott. He says, “The students at UNMC could not be more thankful to the Scotts whose gifts have made this gift possible.”
The only other outdoor skating rink in Omaha is located at the Heartland of America Park is open for only a portion of the winter. The UNMC ice rink will be open daily from December 4th through February 28th. The area will be used year-round as it will provide a place for students to study, concerts, theater productions and other special events.
