Heavy black smoke and bitter cold greeted Omaha firefighters at an apartment fire Tuesday morning near 48th and Taylor just after 7:30. Battalion Fire Chief Tony Lang says fighting a fire in sub-zero temperatures is hard on the crews. He says it drains firefighters rapidly and rotates crews to prevent exhaustion. He says when temperatures are below zero the water quickly turns to ice.
Ten people were evacuated. Two went to a hospital for a checkup. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
