I don’t know how much I can really call this an upset. I guess I say that because of LSU’s recent success on the national scene, but let’s be honest, Connie Yori has a pretty good basketball team. The 20th ranked Huskers came out swining early on and stunned the 5th LSU Tigers 77-63.
NU is now 11-0 while handing LSU their first loss of the year. Kelsie Griffin led NU with 30 points. The Huskers started the game on a 21-4 run the first nine minutes into the game. Like any good team though, LSU responded with closing the lead to five at the start of the second half, but the Huskers went on a 9-0 run and then built their lead to as much as 19.
There were over 7,700 fans who showed up, the largest non-conference crowd for an NU women’s game. Griffin was obviously big for the Huskers, but as a team, NU shot 50% (27-54) and scored 77 points against an LSU defense that had been surrendering just 44 points per game in its first nine games.
Head coach Connie Yori talked about the fan support. “Hopefully, we gave them a pretty good reason to come back.” I would say so. The Huskers are off now until December 30th when they will play Albany at home.
