The American Red Cross is making an appeal to blood donors to give the gift of life during the holiday season. Spokesperson April Oppliger says many people will be spending the holiday season in hospitals and they want to make sure their supply level is up.
“We are particularly looking for people with an O-negative blood type as well as platelet donors.”
Oppliger says the need for blood does not take a holiday.
“You can have the best hospitals, the best technology, the best hospital care giving staff but without blood, those patients would not have the opportunity to go with their holiday.”
Oppliger says many times over the holiday season, people are too busy to stop by and donate blood. She is hoping that people remember to do so as the need is great.
“We need to replenish that supply to make sure there is blood on the shelf when they need it. Those patients don’t get a holiday. They don’t get a snow day like we do. The need for blood continues on.”
The recent snow storm and the holiday season have taken a bite out of blood donations in the area.
