Authorities say a suspect who was wanted for questioning in an Alliance shooting took his own life after a chase.
On Sunday, a state trooper spotted a pickup near Alliance that matched the description of a vehicle wanted in connection with a shooting earlier in the morning. The driver refused to pull over and led the trooper on an 80-mile, 75-minute chase through Box Butte, Scotts Bluff and Morrill counties.
Stop sticks slowed the truck near Bridgeport and the driver pulled to the shoulder. Officers ordered the suspect out of the pickup but 25-year-old Brock Mai of Alliance reportedly shot himself in the head and died at the hospital in Scottsbluff.
State law requires a grand jury be convened anytime a person dies while in police custody or in the process of apprehension.
