Five businesses in North Bend were completely destroyed Monday after a huge fire in the downtown area. Rick Elofson owns a bar and grill across the street and a block away from the blaze and he says one half of a city block was totally engulfed in flames.
A welding shop, a massage therapy store, beauty shop-tanning salon, the local newspaper, the North Bend Eagle and the Poor House Bar were all destroyed. The buildings totaled half a city block.
Six fire departments were called to assist in the blaze. Departments from Fremont, Schuyler, Snyder, Morris Bluff, Fremont Rural and Cedar Bluffs battled the blaze. Elofson said there were probably 15 to 20 trucks fighting the fire.
The Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s office say that a recessed can lighting unit at the Little Off the Top Hair and Nail Salon shorted out and that is what caused the blaze. All of the buildings were located in a portion of town that is over 100 years old and shared a common roof. All five businesses are a total loss. North Bend is located in Dodge County.
