Big Red Report–Huskers offense goes on Holiday

December 31, 2010 By Bill Pollock

Nebraska struggled to find its offense against a motivated Washington Huskie defense in a 19-7 loss to the Huskies in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego.

Washington jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead after an early NU miscue on its first drive of the game, a Rex Burkhead fumble. Washington took over at the 21 yard line and three plays later, Chris Polk’s ran it in from three-yards out to give the Huskies a 7-0 lead. Erik Folk’s 39-yard field goal with 1:29 left in the opening quarter, put UW up ten.

The Big Red Report

Nebraska put together its only successful drive of the night with a 10-play, 74-yard drive capped by Taylor Martinez’s 15-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tight end Kyler Reed. With the catch, Reed set the NU tight end single-season scoring record with his eighth touchdown grab of the year.

That was it for the bright spots. NU managed just 156 total yards in the game, after rolling up 533 yards in the first meeting with the Huskies this season in Seattle. In that game, three Huskers rushed for more than 100 yards among NU’s 383 team rushing yards. Thursday night, NU managed just 91 rushing yards as a team.

Martinez gained 66 yards, but lost 43 yards to net just 23 yards for the game. Martinez completed 7-of-9 passes for 53 yards with one touchdown, but also threw an interception on the night. He left the game after being sacked for a fifth time re-injuring his ankle. Cody Green finished the game 3-for-12 through the air for 45 yards.

Washington turned the tables on NU by amassing 268 yards on the ground, including 177 yards on 34 carries from Polk. The Huskies stretched their lead to 17-7 early in the third quarter on a 25-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jake Locker, who added 83 rushing yards on the night, but was only 5 of 16 for 56 yards and didn’t complete a pass until a minute and a half into the third quarter. In the two games, Locker was just 9 of 36 for 127 yards.

Nebraska committed 12 penalties for 102 yards, fumbled threes times with one lost, and threw one interception. NU’s penalties and yardage were the most by a Husker team in its 47 all-time bowl games. NU finishes the Big 12 era with a 10-4 record.

Study ranks Nebraska well in emergency preparedness

December 31, 2010 By Matt Kelley

Nebraska ranks in the middle of the pack in a new national report that ranks the states on their levels of preparation for health emergencies, from natural disasters to bioterrorist attacks.

Laura Segal, spokeswoman for the group Trust for America’s Health, says they compared ten key factors of preparedness for all 50 states.

Segal says, “We looked at how quickly states could respond to a new incident, running an emergency operations center, assembling a team quickly, developing after-action reports to evaluate what may’ve gone right or what went wrong and testing for new, emerging threats like food-borne illness or other kinds of diseases.”

One area where many states fell short on the rankings was under the heading of increased or maintained levels of funding for public health service. Segal compares it to trying to operate a fire department without having trucks. Like Nebraska, she says virtually all states are struggling financially. [Read more…]

Pelini’s final thoughts and keys to the game

December 30, 2010 By Bill Pollock

Kickoff is just about here for the Holiday Bowl. I know you think about how close Nebraska got to a BCS game and then you find out they’re playing Washington again, but after almost a month off, knowing there is one more game on the schedule, you can’t help but get excited.

Bo Pelini knows his players are ready and doesn’t fear his team looking past this game. What Pelini likes about the way they do things, is how they bring down the number of intense practices and makes sure that the players get to enjoy a lot of time around the bowl game itself.

Everyone always has 10 keys or 5 keys to the game…I’ve got three simple things Nebraska will need to do.

Omaha Preparing For Mayor Recall Election

December 29, 2010 By Karla James

Omahans will head to the polls on January 25th for the Mayor Jim Suttle recall election. Douglas County Election Commissioner Dave Phipps (fips) says early voting starts January 10th. Residents can request a ballot by mail and it will be sent out that day. He believes there will be a lot of requests for early voting.

“Early voting is going to be a good component to this election because you never know what the weather will be like on the 25th. You don’t want to get stuck at home if you can’t make it in.”

Phipps says they are also extremely busy getting everything ready for the election.

“We’ve got the ballots ready to go. We are just about ready to print those. Those should take a few days to print. The biggest thing is getting poll workers and polling places ready to go. We are finalizing that.”

Those not registered to vote can do so at libraries, the DMV or by mail through January 7th. Omaha residents can register in person at the Election Commissioners office until January 14th.

Winter storm headed this way!

December 29, 2010 By Nebraska Radio Network Contributor

The region is bracing for a blast of wintry weather to close out the year.  The National Weather Service in North Platte is calling for more than 6 inches of new snow between Thursday and Friday in some areas of the state. An arctic cold front and a developing storm system are expected to cause snow and blowing snow across western and north central Nebraska beginning Thursday afternoon. The storm is expected to then spread across the remainder of the state from Thursday night into Friday. Gusty winds are predicted with this system which could make travel dangerous across most of Nebraska due to blizzard-like conditions. The service says the highest accumulations will likely occur in the northern part of the state over the next couple of days. Officials are warning travelers to take precautions now to avoid being caught in a dangerous situation Thursday and Friday.

Big Red Report–on Martinez and coach Ekeler

December 29, 2010 By Bill Pollock

The Huskers held their final practice in San Diego yesterday. Bo Pelini met with the media and said there was no doubt that Taylor Martinez would be starting this game at quarterback. Not only is he physically ready to play, but this last month has allowed Martinez a chance to mentally recover as well.

Overall, Pelini couldn’t be happier with the way Taylor has progressed and how much he’s learned and Pelini says you have to remember he’s still just a freshman.

Also in this report, Sean Callahan talks with Pelini about linebackers coach Mike Ekeler leaving for Indiana.
