Renae Sinkler hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to give the Creighton softball team a 2-0 lead after the first inning for the second straight game, but the Bluejays were unable to hold the lead in falling to Notre Dame 11-3 in six innings Friday morning at the Tempe Sports Complex in the Kajikawa Classic.
Liz McKewon started the game with a bunt single and scored on Sinkler’s first blast of the year, giving the Bluejays (0-2) a 2-0 lead over the Fighting Irish (1-0). Sinkler’s 27th career home run ties her with TJ Eadus for fifth in school history.
Notre Dame started its comeback in the second inning, plating an unearned run. The Irish then erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third. Christine Lux smashed a three-run home run to give Notre Dame the lead and Dani Miller followed with a solo shot to put the Irish up 5-2 after three.
Notre Dame added two more runs in the fifth before the Jays tacked on a run in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 7-3. The Jays loaded the bases with no outs and scored when Michelle Koch was hit by a pitch. The Bluejays then had three at bats with the tying run at the plate, but could not push any more runs across.
The game was halted due to the eight-run rule when Notre Dame scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Creighton plays Oregon later this afternoon at the Tempe Sports Complex.
