The number three Nebraska women’s basketball team will go after conference win number 12 this afternoon at the Devaney Center against Colorado. A victory over the Buffaloes be a school record for Big 12 wins, and it would also add to the team’s school record 24 wins on the season.
So far, this season has been perfect for the Huskers who are 24-0 and 11-0 in conference play. Win number 24 came on Wednesday night against number 13 Iowa State. Current Big 12 player of the week Kelsey Griffin would have a double double as the Cornhuskers beat the Cyclones 60-50.
It was a record setting night as Griffin became just the second player in school history with 1800 points and 900 rebounds. But she was not alone when it came to school records on Wednesday. With eight points in the game, Yvonne Turner became the 25th player in school history to score 1000 points. She joins two other players on the roster, Griffin and Cory Montgomery in the 1000 point club.
Colorado makes the trip to Lincoln in the middle of a seven game losing streak. Their latest loss came on Tuesday night against Kansas. Colorado is led by junior guard Brittney Spears who is averaging more than 127 points per game. This is quite a change for a team that started the season 11-3. The Buffaloes are now 12-12 on the season and 2-9 in Big 12 Conference play.
The Buffaloes do lead the all time series against the Cornhuskers, but in the first meeting between these two teams, it really was not close. Nebraska went on the road to Boulder at the end of January and beat Colorado 80-64. The Cornhuskers have won 10 of the last 12 games against the Buffaloes.
Nebraska will be trying to stretch their school record winning streak to 25 games, while also going after their 18th straight win at the Devaney Center. A win would also give them the second best start in Big 12 Conference play history, just four games behind Oklahoma who in 2005-2006 were a perfect 16-0.
Nebraska and Colorado will tip off this afternoon at 1:05.
