The Wayne State baseball team overcame the elements to pull off a double header sweep of Augustana Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Austen Wisroth struck out 11 Viking hitters in Wayne State’s 8-2 victory over Augustana in the first game. WSC then committed three errors in game two and fell behind 9-2 after five and a half innings, but the Wildcats scored four runs in both the sixth and seventh inning to down the Vikings 10-9.
In other Wayne State baseball news, former pitcher Nick Schumacher will start the 2010 season in the High Class A Advanced California League, pitching for the Lake Elsinore Storm in the San Diego Padres organization.
Schumacher, was 6-0 record with a 1.11 ERA in 37 appearances as a reliever with the Fort Wayne TinCaps of the Class A Midwest League in 2009, helping the team win the Midwest League title. The Nebraska City native worked 56 2/3 innings, allowing just 47 hits and nine runs (seven earned) with 55 strikeouts and just 14 walks as a setup man in relief. Opponents his just .226 off Schumacher last season.
Schumacher was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 28th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Draft.
