Just as I had talked about in my April 2nd article on Kelsey Griffin, the standout Husker guard was selected third overall in the WNBA draft by the Minnesota Lynx and then traded to the Connecticut Sun for their first and second round choices next year.
Here is what I predicted last week. “Griffin is certainly a first round selection and could easily be the one of the choices of the Minnesota Lynx who have the 2nd and 3rd overall pick. I would expect the Connecticut Sun to take a UCONN player. It would make sense from a geographical standpoint for a midwest team to select Griffin.”
I was correct in that Connecticut took UCONN center Tina Charles and no big surprise that Griffin went third. What is surprising is that Minnesota would give another WNBA team a dominating center and guard for next season. After the selection and trade Griffin said, “I was very excited about Minnesota, but Connecticut has a great fan base. I have talked to the Connecticut coaches and I’m excited to play with Tina Charles. She’s such a great player.”
Cory Montgomery was the 25th player selected overall when she was the first pick of the third round selected by the New York Liberty.
