A major gift to the University of Nebraska is being announced. University of Nebraska President J.B. Milliken is announcing a $50 million gift commitment from the Robert B Daugherty Foundation to support a Global water for food institute, one one of the largest gifts in the University’s history. It will create a multi-campus center for research, education, and policy analysis relating to the use of water for agriculture.
“The earth’s population is expected to grow 40% over the next half century and food productionrequirements during that period are expected to double with the same amount of land and water available.”
Water for food is one of the top priorities that the University has identified in its more than one Billion dollar Campaign for Nebraska announced in October of 2009. Milliken says the gift will allow the University to become a global resource for developing solutions to the challenges of hunger, poverty, agricultural productivity, and water management.
