Freshman Amy Baker of the Creighton softball team has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week for the second consecutive week after continuing her recent tear at the plate. The rookie went 7-for-14 with two home runs, two doubles and eight RBI in Creighton’s five games last week to move her season numbers to 11 home runs, 36 RBI and a .351 average.
Baker moved her hitting streak to eight games with a pair of doubles in Creighton’s 8-0 win over Kansas on Thursday. After she had her hitting streak snapped, she rebounded by recording her third multi-home run game of the season in CU’s series opener with Northern Iowa. She belted a solo homer and a three-run shot in the Bluejays’ 8-2 win over UNI on Saturday. In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, she had an RBI single and was walked and hit by a pitch to help CU win 4-3.
The designated player wrapped up her second straight weekly conference honor by going 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored in an 8-0 win over the Panthers on Sunday. For the week, the Omaha Westside product slugged 1.071, had an on-base percentage of .632 and scored four runs. During her two-week reign as MVC Player of the Week, she is hitting .516 (16-31) with two doubles, eight home runs, 22 RBI and 11 runs scored. Her slugging percentage is 1.355 and her on-base percentage is .625 in CU’s 11 games over the past two weeks.
With 11 home runs on the season, she has established a school record for freshmen. Her 11 blasts are tied for seventh most in a single-season at CU, while her 36 RBI are just four shy of the Creighton rookie record set in 1989. Creighton (23-18, 8-5 MVC) will look to improve upon its six-game MVC winning streak when it plays a doubleheader at Drake (28-12, 9-5 MVC) on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
