Mike McQuillan’s two-run seventh-inning single broke a 2-2 game open as the Iowa Hawkeyes scored three times to beat the struggling Nebraska Cornhuskers 5-2.
McQuillan went 2-for-4 and came up with the big hit off reliever Jordan Roualdes. The Huskers (19-22) threatened in the ninth against Iowa closer Kevin Lee and got the tying run to the plate with one out. Bryan Peters started the rally as he was hit by a pitch before Cade Thompson’s single put runners on first and second. Lee got pinch hitter Boomer Collins to foul out for the second out before DJ Belfonte nearly provided a dramatic moment of his own. The senior just missed a game-tying homer, as his liner just hooked foul before Lee got him to pop out to second on a 3-2 pitch to finish off his eighth save.
The Huskers will begin a three-game series with Texas A&M Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
