Tara Oltman and Renae Sinkler of the Creighton softball team added milestones and records to their careers while taking two of three from Illinois State this weekend. The loss ended a 13 game conference winning streak.
First, pitcher Tara Oltman threw a one-hitter and struck out 12 in a 3-1 win over Illinois State. Oltman struck out Beth Current to end the game, her 1,036th career K, tying the MVC record. All the scoring in the game was done with solo home runs, as Michelle Koch, Lauren Larson and Renae Sinkler each went deep for the Bluejays (31-20, 16-6 MVC).
Koch became the first Bluejay to lead off a game with a home run since Bailey Dawson did the honors on March 14, 2009 at Evansville. Larson added to Creighton’s lead with a solo home run to lead off the second inning. Sinkler hit the Bluejays’ third solo home run of the game with two outs in the fifth inning. She hit her 20th home run of the year, adding to her MVC single-season record that she set on Saturday and got to within one blast of the MVC career record. Her 46 career homers are one shy of Amber Smith’s (Illinois State) mark of 47. She scored her 50th run of the season on the round tripper, tying Mary Yori’s Creighton single-season record set in 1981.
Oltman improved to 27-11 on the year, retiring the final 11 batters she faced in the complete game victory. The All-American, who moved past 1,000 career innings pitched in the game, walked one, hit one batter and allowed just a solo homerun. She fanned 12 to tie Darcy Wood’s (Indiana State) MVC record of 1,036 career strikeouts.
