A mumps outbreak in Nebraska is being connected to an athletic event in Columbus. Most of the 20 suspected or confirmed mumps cases have been linked to participation or attendance an alumni basketball tournament in late March at Columbus Scotus High School. Nebraska Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joann Schaeffer describes what to look for.
“If your glands are swollen and you have, you have a fever, headache, and you’ve been exposed to someone with mumps, you should see your healthcare provider.
Dr. Schaeffer says that normally, Nebraska has a handful of mumps cases every year that are sporadic and appear as isolated cases.
The Iowa Public Health Department is also experiencing a mumps outbreak…but it is unknown at this time if the Nebraska cases are connected.
