The New Orleans Zephyrs hit a pair of two-out, two-run homers Sunday afternoon at Rosenblatt Stadium, while the Omaha Royals went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position in a 4-1 loss for Omaha.
With two outs in the first inning, Doug Mientkiewicz singled and Hector Luna followed with a line drive homer over the left field wall to give New Orleans the early 2-0 lead. Those were the only runs allowed by Omaha starter Philip Humber, who gave up just two singles and a walk over the next six innings. Humber (2-3) struck out five, but took the loss.
Leading 2-1 in the ninth, Jason Lane singled with two outs and came home when Donnie Murphy blasted Victor Marte’s 1-0 delivery over the left field wall for his second home run of the series and fourth of the season.
The Royals’ lone run came in the fourth when, with two outs, Jordan Parraz doubled off the warning track in right-center and Jai Miller followed with a looping single to center for his fourth RBI in 10 games with the Royals.
The finale of the shortened, three-game series is Monday at 11:05 a.m. The pitching matchup has New Orleans righty Rick VandenHurk (2-2, 5.33) facing Omaha right-hander Gaby Hernandez (2-2, 6.12).
