Unless they come up with $280,000 soon, this year’s Cox Classic Golf Tournament won’t be broadcast on the Golf Channel. Tournament Director Chad Mardesen says the fee to televise the event would have taken money away from the charities to which the tournament contributes.
“Unfortunately, paying that much money in these economic times is just a rough one so we had to make the decision to give the money to the charity.”
Because the money had to be given to charity, Mardesen says something had to go.
“We had to make the decision to give the money to the charity rather than continue to fund the Golf Channel at that level.”
Mardesen says if it has to go this year, they hope money can be raised in the future so the Golf Channel is included in future events.
“It is great for the community. Great for the tournament. It is really wonderful for everyone involved so it is our goal to bring it back.”
This year’s Cox Classic runs from July 29th to August 1st.
