Wichita State intentionally walked two-time MVC Player of the Year Renae Sinkler to start the eighth inning and Lauren Larson drove her home from second base with the game-winning run, as the Creighton softball team topped Wichita State 5-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Thursday night at Buel Field in Des Moines, Iowa.
The strategy against Sinkler backfired, who earlier in the game hit here MVC record 23rd home run of the season to tie up a game that went back and forth in the late innings. Larson, the sophomore catcher, also homered earlier for the seventh time this season and she proved to be the offensive hero. Larson went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Sinkler scored a pair of runs, going 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Tara Oltman went the distance, throwing 162 pitches for her 29th win of the year. The three-time MVC Pitcher of the Year battled, finishing with seven hits allowed, three walks and seven strikeouts to move to 29-12 on the season.
Creighton will not play 2nd seeded Illinois State Friday at 1:30 p.m.
