The Lincoln Saltdogs won their 2010 home opener on Tuesday, beating Wichita 2-1 at Haymarket Park. Lincoln improves to 7-4 on the season.
Saltdogs starter Tim Brown (1-1) dominated the Wichita lineup all night, holding them to just an unearned run over seven strong innings. Brown walked one and struck out two, and of the 21 outs he recorded on the night, 15 of them came via the ground ball. Adam Daniels pitched a perfect eighth inning, and Chris Thompson tossed a perfect ninth for his sixth save.
Wichita, which was held to just three hits all night, scored its only run in the second inning. Former Saltdog Mario Delgado reached on an error, went to second on a bloop single, reached third on a double play and scored on an infield single by Chris Colton. That RBI single would prove to be the final hit of the night for the Wingnuts, who only managed one baserunner the rest of the way.
Lincoln tied the game quickly, on a solo home run by Argelis Nunez in the bottom of the second. The Saltdogs scored the decisive run in the fourth inning. Juan Richardson led off with a double, took third on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nunez. The Saltdogs only had five hits all evening, but still won their seventh in a row.
Nunez finished the night 1-for-2 with his second home run and two RBI. Richardson had the only multi-hit game for either team, going 2-for-4, while Gavin Dickey stole his fifth base in as many tries.
The two teams play game two of their three-game series Wednesday morning at 11:00am. Right-hander Billy Weitzman will take the mound for the Saltdogs.
