New Orleans starter Brian Lawrence pitched seven strong innings help the Zephyrs to a 4-3 win over the Omaha Royals. The 34 year old vet allowed a first inning home run to Omaha second baseman Kurt Mertins, and then shut the Royals out over the next six innings, striking out seven. Mertins had three of the Royals seven hits on the night.
With the game tied at one in the sixth inning, Royals starter Anthony Lerew allowed three of his season-high, five walks, including a bases-loaded walk to Donnie Murphy to make it a 2-1 game. New Orleans scored two more runs on a RBI single from Danny Richar and a passed ball to make it 4-1.
The Royals pulled to within a run on a two-RBI single from Scott Thorman in the eighth inning. Zephyrs closer Scott Strickland preserved the New Orleans win with a scoreless ninth for his fifth save of the year.
Omaha will play the finale of their four-game set with New Orleans on Friday night. Omaha right-hander Philip Humber (4-3) will face Zephyr right-hander Brad Stone (2-1).
