The Lincoln Saltdogs rallied to avoid a sweep on Sunday, beating Wichita 13-8 in 10 innings salvaging one of the three games in this road series.
The Saltdogs trailed 8-4 going into the ninth inning and got RBI hits by Juan Richardson and Albenis Machado cut the Wichita lead to 8-6. Shawn McGill scored on a throwing error to make it 8-7. With two on and two out in the ninth, Rafael Alvarez hit an RBI single on an 0-2 pitch to tie the game at eight.
Lincoln then blew the Wingnuts away with a five-run tenth inning. McGill started the scoring with an RBI single off of Wichita reliever Matt Petty (0-1). After a walk loaded the bases, Machado hit a two-run double to increase Lincoln’s lead to three. Brandon Jones hit a sacrifice fly for the fourth run, and Alvarez capped the scoring with another RBI single.
Saltdogs closer Chris Thompson (1-0), who allowed just one hit over the ninth and tenth innings to earn his first win of the season. Previous to Thompson, four relievers allowed five runs in three innings of work, before the Saltdogs mounted their ninth-inning rally.
