It’s definitely tornado season in western Nebraska. The Discovery Channel’s “Storm Chasers” star Reed Timmer and his crew are mobilizing in Sidney, expecting to see tornadoes today. Timmer and his crew are staying at a Sidney hotel.
Timmer says, “(Today) actually looks like a potential tornado outbreak, probably between Sidney and North Platte, maybe a little bit north, possibly even around this area so people should definitely stay tuned to the warning system.”
Timmer is a meteorologist and lead storm chaser with the Dominator Storm Research Vehicle. His crew includes Discovery Channel producers and cameramen and a medic vehicle.
The crew’s storm chasing plans will seem crazy to those with a weak stomach for storms. “We have the tornado tank here in Sidney, and it looks like the next couple of days could be pretty active in this area,” he says. “We try to drive into tornadoes and measure data inside that people without a tank can’t do.”
In recent days the Panhandle has seen a twister touchdown near Scottsbluff and many storms have caused the National Weather Service to issue tornado warnings this week.
