The same weekend the World Cup kicked off, the Boys and Girls Shrine Soccer Classic took place in Hastings with both South squad’s coming up with 2-0 wins.
A pair of goals late in each half gave the South squad to a 2-0 victory Saturday in the 2010 Girls Shrine Soccer Classic at the Osborne Sports Complex at Hastings College.
Katie Pickenpaugh, a Millard West graduate, scored with 11 minutes, 14 seconds left in the first half. Pickenpaugh was set up on the goal by Sarah Nelson of Omaha Westside. Nelson was named Most Valuable Player of the game. Pickenpaugh centered a pass to her high school teammate Megan Merrill (a NU recruit) for an easy goal with 17:12 left in the game.
In the Boys Shrine Soccer Classic, The game’s first score didn’t come until the 57 minute mark when Omaha South’s Manny Lira knocked a deflection past North goalkeeper Hunter Haney of North Platte. Lira’s goal would stick until South’s Jake Essi, of Omaha Westside, connected on a header with :40 left to ice the game.
