Planned Parenthood is filing a lawsuit against the Governor, Attorney General, and several other state officials following the passage of a law that the organization claims is impossible to comply with. The informed consent law for abortions is set to go into effect next month and aims to provide women seeking abortions with complete information about the risks involved with the procedure. Planned Parenthood of the Heartland CEO Jill June says doctors providing abortions are already complying with the extensive requirements ordered under Nebraska law.
“LB594 makes impossible requirements. it is not possible to comply with what is required by this legislation.”
June claims that under the law, it would take doctors an extensive amount of time to brief patients on material that may be out of date, debunked, or inaccurate. During debate in the legislature, Senator Cap Dierks explained that he wanted all of the risks of an abortion to known by the patient. Attorney General Jon Bruning says his office is prepared to vigorously defend the state in this lawsuit.
