Dana College in Blair is closing its doors. The College was sold earlier this year and the Higher Learning Commission denied their application for a change of control. This means the college loses its accreditation.
“It is just a devastating blow to our community.”
Harriett Waite is the Chamber of Commerce director in Blair and says she was stunned when she learned that Dana would be closing. She was in the midsts of working with Dana in welcoming new students to the community.
“Up until yesterday, I was working with the staff from up there on how to welcome 300 new students this fall. The future was looking good.”
Waite says Dana is a huge economic benefit to the community. She says students are very much a part of Blair as well.
“They hired them to work in their businesses during the school year. They served as interns in their businesses. They count on them to come and eat in their businesses and buy smoothies and buy clothing.”
Dana has been the college on the hill for the past 126 years and has a rich history.
“Dana was a crowned jewel in our community and it is a very sad day today.”
