A number of major highway construction projects are underway across the region, but tight budgets are limiting just how much will get done. Kris Winter, the District Three Engineer for the Nebraska Department of Roads in Norfolk, says they have just a couple of large projects this year.
One of the largest projects is the resurfacing of Highway 20 from Royal to Plainview. Another larger project is construction on Highway 75, south of Macy. Winter says many projects have slipped on the DOR’s five-year plan because of the tight budgets.
She says during the fall review, entire years had to be moved out of the project-planning process due to a lack of funding. Winter says another issue is the amount of time it takes to design and build a project.
Winter says their construction budget this year is 30-million dollars, which is down seven-million from last year.
