Gage County Sheriff Millard “Gus” Gustafson says 73 year old Cecil Creek of Beatrice, was found unresponsive in his cell by a cellmate, 19-year-old Corde Honea.
Gage County Corrections officers performed CPR and used an automated external defibrillator on Creek. A Beatrice Fire and Rescue ambulance was sent to the Gage County Detention Center at about 11:30 a.m.
The cause of death is under investigation. A death in police custody requires a grand jury investigation, by state law.
Creek had been awaiting sentencing. A Gage County District Court Jury found him guilty last April, of a felony charge of sexual assault of a minor. He was facing a sentence of up to 50years in prison. Creek had a prior 1999 conviction for sexual assault of a child.
