The Omaha Royals were beat by the Albuquerque Isotopes 2-1 Sunday as the Royals lost first place in the Pacific Coast League’s American Conference North to the Iowa Cubs following their win. Omaha (48-41) trails Iowa (49-41) by a half-game as the 2010 season has reached the All-Star break.
Albuquerque starter James McDonald (6-1) held the Royals to one run on four hits in 6.1 innings. The Isotopes scored two runs in the fourth inning off Royals starter Bryan Bullington. Russ Mitchell led off the frame by homering to left. It was Mitchell’s 12th home run of the year and his fifth facing Omaha. With two outs in the inning, Elian Herrera’s RBI single up the middle brought in Jay Gibbons, who had doubled.
The Royals scored their only run in the sixth. Jai Miller led off with a double to right. He took third on a groundout and scored when Jordan Parraz grounded out to third base. Omaha batters went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, leaving seven runners on base.
Bullington (6-2), who had won each of his last three starts, took the loss after allowing two runs on eight hits over six innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out five. His ERA, which ranked fourth in the league is to 2.86.
Outfielder Alex Gordon and first baseman Kila Ka’aihue will represent the Royals at the Triple-A All-Star Game in Allentown, Pennsylvania on Wednesday.
