Mayor Chris Beutler has announced another round of budget cuts that are expected to save the City around $635,000. The cuts include reorganizing the Forestry Division of Parks and Rec, moving Middle School Resource Officers to different duties, no longer funding the the Star City Holiday Parade or the Uncle Sam Jam and dropping two StarTran routes.
Mayor Beutler says he hopes that private fundraising will take up the slack from the $70,000 in city money lost to the Star City Holiday Parade and the $40,000 the city gives to the Uncle Sam Jam. GoLincolnGo, the organization that puts on the parade says the mayor’s decision puts the event in jeopardy. In a press release, GoLincolnGo says they already raise $200,000 for the parade and another $70,000 will be tough to raise in a short period of time with a tough economy.
The StarTran routes being eliminated run from Gateway to the Walmart on North 84th Street and from Gateway to Edgewood. Saving from those routes will be $168,000.
All of these cuts are proposed and require city council approval. The mayor’s full budget, which is expected to include more cuts, will be released Sunday.
