21-year-old Mike Moustakas was promoted by the Kansas City Royals from AA Northwest Arkansas to Omaha. He is expected to be in the lineup Thursday night when Omaha opens a series at Nashville.
He’ll hit fifth behind Alex Gordon and Kila Ki’iahue who bat third and fourth, both of them were in the Minor League All-Star game last night. The Pacific Coast League lost to the International League 2-1. There were just five hits by each team as both Gordon and Ki’aihue went 0 for 2 for the PCL.
As far as Moustakas, he went 0 for 3 in the Future’s All-Star game in Anaheim on Sunday, but his manager at AA NW Arkansas knows he can hit and thinks he can make a run for the major league roster come next spring. Apparently the organization feels the same way. They sent Gordon, who came up as a third basemen, back to AAA to learn to play left field.
If Moustakas is not ready for 2011, the Royals still have Josh Fields who had hip surgery before the season started.
