The Memphis Redbirds scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 5-5 to beat the Omaha Royals 7-5. The loss, Omaha’s second in a row to Memphis, drops them into fourth place, three games back in the American Conference North.
Down 5-3 after six innings, the Royals rallied for a single run in the seventh on a David Lough RBI grounder to cut the Redbird lead to one. In the eighth, former O-Royal, Mike MacDougal gave up a solo homer to Mike Moustakas, his second homer in as many days to make it 5-5 game.
In the bottom half, Memphis rallied for a pair of runs against Devon Lowery (0-1). Former O-Royal Ruben Gotay led off the eighth with a walk, went to third on Donovan Solano’s single, and scored on an infield hit from Jim Rappoport to make it 6-5. A batter later, Mark Shorey added an RBI single to make it 7-5.
The Royals, now 2-5 on this road trip, plays the final of their four-game series in Memphis against the Redbirds on Thursday night. Philip Humber (4-6) will make the start against Redbirds righty P.J. Walters (4-2).
