A truck fire on Interstate 80 near Paxton in western Nebraska shut down the interstate for a short time Sunday.
According to the Nebraska State Patrol, a semi truck hauling potatoes caught fire Sunday afternoon just before 3 mountain time. Trooper Kevin Horst said 26 year old Naseer Shafiq of Canada was headed eastbound between Roscoe and Paxton on Interstate 80 when he heard a “pop” from the back of his cab. Shafiq said he saw flames in his mirror and pulled the truck to the side of the road. He and his passenger were able to escape before the entire cab was engulfed in flames.
The westbound lanes of the interstate were closed for about a half hour and the eastbound driving lane was closed for about two and a half hours due to thick smoke. Firefighters from multiple communities extinguished the flames. No citations were issued in the incident and no injuries were reported.
