Nashville scored an opponent’s season-high as the Sounds crushed the Omaha Royals 16-2 in front of 3,801 fans in the series opener at Greer Stadium.
Up 3-0 in the sixth inning, the Sounds offense sent 29 men to the plate over the game’s final three innings to score 13 runs to win their fourth consecutive game over the Royals.
Royals starter Luis Mendoza (5-8) took the loss allowing five runs – three earned – over six innings.
Royals relievers Manauris Baez and Matt Herges allowed six runs in the seventh inning.
Royals designated hitter Scott Thorman pitched the eighth, giving up five runs on five hits and two walks.
The Royals two runs came on a Kila Ka’aihue two-run shot in the eighth off Sounds lefty Mitch Stetter, his 23rd of the year.
Nashville starter Marty McLeary threw 6.1 scoreless innings, striking out a season-high nine to get his second win over Omaha in the past ten days.
The Royals, who have dropped 10 of their last 14, play the second of their four-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 CDT. Royals lefty Blaine Hardy (2-3) will make the start against Sounds southpaw Sam Narron (6-3).
