Governor Dave Heineman continues to consider pushing an effort to have an Arizona type immigration law in Nebraska, Senator Mike Johanns says he doesn’t blame him. Arizona recently appealed a federal judge’s ruling that eliminated several parts of that law.
“The federal government won, at least partially, round one on the court battle but I really do believe states have rights here when it comes to enforcing the laws that protect their citizens so I can’t quibble a bit. If Arizona goes that direction, or Kansas, or Nebraska, because the federal government simply hasn’t gotten the job done here.”
Senator Johanns says he understands the frustration many states, including Nebraska, regarding this issue. He admits the federal government basically dropped the ball.
“And I couldn’t quibble with that because the federal government wasn’t getting the job done at the border and on immigration issues and that is just the reality of what we are dealing with.”
