Omaha centerfielder Jarrod Dyson belted a grand slam to cap a six run second inning as the Royals cruised to a road win over the Sacramento River Cats. The win was the Royals sixth in a row and tenth in their last eleven games.
Dyson’s slam was the first professional homer of his career in more than 11 hundred plate appearances off Sacramento starter Clayton Mortensen. Earlier in the inning, Scott Thorman crushed his 17th homer of the season, a two-run shot to give the Royals a 2-1 lead.
Royals starter Luis Mendoza won his third straight start, pitching seven strong innings allowing just two hits, and two runs to get the win.
Reliever Louis Coleman would throw two scoreless innings. He would strike out four River Cats.
Omaha, now 66-54 on the season, plays the second game of the series tonight as lefthander Blaine Hardy pitches for the Royals against River Cats lefty John Halama.
Game time is 9:05 local time.
