Five people have been killed recently in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa in two separate accidents and authorities say both drivers responsible were under the influence of alcohol. One crash was in the early evening hours and the other during morning rush hour. La Vista Police Chief Bob Lausten says in the past, drunk driving was an issue after bar closing time. Times have changed.
“There are drunks on the road all the time and I think the time for daytime checkpoints is here.”
Chief Lausten says since we are seeing more drunk drivers at all hours of the day, we need to keep on top of this now before it gets out of hand.
“We need some innovation and maybe we need regional task force for DUI like some other states have.”
Chief Lausten says all Nebraskans can help in making sure we have no more tragedies like the ones last week when five people died. He says if you suspect someone is behind the wheel intoxicated, call 9-1-1.
“That there is a report. Let everybody know what is going on and then back off and let law enforcement do their job.”
Charges are expected to be filed against both drivers involved in the fatal crashes.
