The Omaha Royals rallied from a 4-3 deficit in the ninth to score three runs and then hold off Fresno for a 6-5 win Thursday night. The O-Royals won their tenth game in their last 12 and remain 1.5 games behind the Iowa Cubs, who beat Sacramento, in the American Conference North.
Down 4-3 in the ninth, Lucas May and Jordan Parraz singled to start the inning. Marc Maddox reached with a bunt single in front of the plate, and Fresno catcher Steve Holm threw wildly down the line to score both May and Parraz, giving the Royals a 5-4 lead. Maddox, who ended up at third base on the throwing error, scored on a Irving Falu single to make it 6-4.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, reliever Josh Rupe put two runners on and with Emmanuel Burriss lined a double to cut Omaha’s lead to 6-5. Lefty Tim Collins came into relieve Rupe with runners on at second and third with one out. Collins got the final two out to secure his first AAA save. The Royals battled all the way back from a 4-0 hole after five innings.
Omaha wraps up their series with Fresno on Friday night. Anthony Lerew (7-3) will start against Grizzlies’ Eric Hacker (15-5).
