We are less than two weeks away from the start of the 2010 season, and the Huskers believe it or not will start game planning for their first opponent, Western Kentucky later this week. While nothing has been decided yet, it appears two of the three quarterbacks are starting to separate themselves from the three person race.
NU fans know of Zac Lee and sophomore quarterback Cody Green who saw some action last season, but as far as Taylor Martinez, the redshirt freshman has caught a lot of attention ever since the spring game in April. Martinez not only has a strong arm, but what the Huskers call explosive speed. Martinez comes from Corona California where he passed for 28 touchdowns and ran for 12 more his senior season at Centennial High School, a team that was voted 2nd in the country by USA Today.
More Husker news, kicker Alex Henery was named to the Lou Groza Award watch list. That award is given to the nation’s best kicker. In Henery’s career, the senior has made 50-of-57 field goals (.877), and has only missed twice inside of 50 yards. 47 of 49. He holds the Memorial Stadium record of 57 yards which came against Colorado in 2008. Last year Henery handled the punting as well and averaged just over 41 yards.
