The Omaha Royals scored six runs in the third inning won 7-3 over the Memphis Redbirds Monday night. It was Omaha’s 12th win in 16 games, and after Iowa’s 8-6 loss to Nashville, Omaha is in second place in the PCL American North division trailing the Cubs by 2.5 games.
The Royals sent eleven batters to the plate, scoring six runs on six hits and two walks to chase Memphis starter P.J. Walters (7-5), who was charged with six runs on eight hits and three walks in 2.2 innings.
Brian Bannister, making his first rehab assignment start with Omaha, allowed a hit to the first batter of the game, Tyler Greene, but then retired the final five batters he faced. Luis Mendoza (10-8) came on in the third inning and issued a leadoff walk, but then retired ten straight and 14 of the next 15 Redbirds he faced.
Omaha (72-58) will look to take three of four from Memphis (71-59) and earn a split of the 16-game season series with a win Tuesday, when the Royals host the Redbirds at 12:05 p.m.
