It was déjà vu for the Omaha Royals as they would get behind early, but almost come all the way back against the Iowa Cubs. The Royals would come up just short losing 9-8, and are now three and a half games behind the Cubs for first place in the division.
Iowa led 8-1 after the top of the sixth and still led 9-3 going to the bottom of the eighth.
The Royals would then put three runs on the board, with two of those coming off a home run by Marc Maddox. It was the second home run of the season for Omaha’s second baseman and gave him his third RBI of the game, as he had doubled home a run in the sixth.
In the bottom of the ninth, Irving Falu started the Royals rally by leading off with a double down the right field line. Jarrod Dyson followed with a single to left-center which would score Falu.
David Lough then hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 9-8. Mike Moustakas would then hit a deep fly ball which would be caught at the warning track. Ed Lucas would then ground into a double play to end the game.
Game four of the five-game series is tonight as Kansas City right-hander Luke Hochevar will make his first rehab assignment start for Omaha, coming back from a strained right elbow, facing Cubs righty Austin Bibens-Dirkx.
Game time is 7:05.
