Wayne State rushed for 202 yards and held off a fourth quarter rally from Nebraska-Kearney to win 24-17 in OT in the season opener for both teams. Despite losing their starting quarterback in the first, Chadron State cruised to a 35-3 win over the University of Mary.
Wayne State, which trails the head to head series with UNK 58-19-6 has now won three straight against their in-state rival and they snapped the Lopers modest 11 game home winning streak as well.
Chadron State opened their season with a 35-3 victory over the University of Mary. Chadron lost its starting quarterback, senior Garrett Treffer , with a hip pointer in the first half, but the offense didn’t slow down and the defense held Mary to 97 yards of total offense.
Treffer and redshirt freshmen Jonn McClain combined to go 15 of 22 for 210 yard with two touchdowns and one pick. Michael Ziola kicked four field goals all inside of 35 yards.
