What else can you say about the defense in the Huskers 38-17 win over the Idaho Vandals on Saturday. With the win, the Huskers at 2-0 will prepare for a trip to Washington. NU ranked 8th in the AP and Coaches Poll.
The defense recovered one of three fumbles and sacked the Idaho QBs a total of seven times including North Platte native Nathan Enderle who got picked off five times.
In that big second quarter when NU scored four times, two of those coming off picks. DeJon Gomes ran one back 40 yards and then on Idaho’s next possession, Ricky Thenarse took one back the other way 47 yards for six. That made the score 31-0. PJ Smith, who had Nebraska’s first interception said the defense was talking on the sidelines like it was Christmas time as Enderle was giving them present after present. Smith felt they could have had more than five picks.
On the offensive side of the ball there were three touchdown runs including two from quarterback Taylor Martinez who busted off a 67 yarder in the second quarter and a 20 yard in the third, but NU couldn’t hold onto the football and Martinez also threw a pick. Bo Pelini didn’t waste much time after the game talking to the offense.
