The University of Nebraska – Lincoln Biological Process Development Facility is teaming with the Geneva, Switzerland company in the development of a product that may be used as a preventative against HIV/AIDS. Dr. Michael Meagher is the Director of the Biological Process Development Facility at U-N-L and says Mintaka Foundation of Medical Research developed this microbicide that shows promise in protecting women from contracting and spreading HIV/AIDS.
Dr. Meagher says early testing on animals is showing very good results and when the vaginal cream had been used on monkeys, five out of five have been protected.
The lab at UNL will develop the process and actually manufacture the product for phase one and two of the clinical trials.
The BPD facility in Lincoln is also looking at costs while developing the product and it is expected that one dose will only cost a few cents.
