The wife of US Afghan Commander David Petraeus is in Omaha today as part of the Better Business Bureau’s Integrity Awards Luncheon. Holly Petraeus is also the National Director of the BBB’s Military line, a national program that provides consumer tips and warnings for military families.
“It is intended to help military personnel and their families be smarter consumers and learn about the scams that are out there.”
Since military families travel and have to set up homes frequently, Mrs. Petraeus says they often are targets of scam artists especially when they move to a new base and they are unfamiliar with their new location.
“The BBB is a great place to go to find out where the legitimate businesses are that will treat you fairly.”
Mrs. Petraeus says one widely used scam involves a person convincing to take a service members money with promises of a special rate loan.
“We had one soldier who had wired eight thousand dollars and she never heard anything again. They just take your money and walk away.”
Mrs. Petraeus says the program provides information and techniques to avoid being financially duped.
