There are more details available today about Wednesday night’s workplace shooting at the Americold distribution center near Crete. According to Saline County Attorney Tad Eichman the shooter Akouch Kashoual, 26, from Lincoln went to work as usual that Wednesday evening and then this happened.
“He was at work for a period of an hour…and then he checke out complaining of an illness of some sort, it;s our understanding that he went back to his home in Lincoln where we believe he got the gun that was used, went back to the plant…went up the stairwell, that led to the break room, fired one shot actually through a window and a door that went into the break room, then went into the break room and started shooting.”
According to Eichman, Kashoual used a 9mm Smith and Wesson semi-automatic pistol in the shooting, concentrating his fire on Elizabeth Canas from Crete. Canas was hit 11 times.
“The victim who was shot the most times was shot while located in the breakroom, she fled from there, went down a stairway inside the plant, shooter followed after her, shooting after her, eventually she was shot at least one time if not more while she was located outside. He left the area and went out to his car and at that point shot himself in the head and he died.”
Canas, age 40, was taken to Bryan LGH West in Lincoln by air and was in surgery for around 8 hours. She was in critical condition yesterday afternoon but is expected to recover. Renee Villareal,23, was also taken to Bryan where he had surgery and was released. The third victim Paul Rivera,42, was taken to Crete Area Medical Center where he was treated and released. Villareal and Rivera are also from Crete.
