It is the start of Big 12 play tonight for the Nebraska football team, their final go around in the conference and a very important game to start Big 12 play.
This game really counts for two in the standings, because whoever wins holds the tie-breaker should both teams be tied in the North at the end of the season. Nebraska is favored to repeat as Big 12 North Champs and K-State was picked third. This is a crucial game…almost a must win and you need to look no further than last year.
The Huskers were favored to win the North over Missouri and both teams met on a rainy Thursday night in the first week of Big 12 play. For three quarters, the Huskers looked dead in the water until a fourth quarter surge and 27 unanswered points led to a 27-12 win. Nebraska went on to lose the next two weeks and finished 6-2 in the Big 12. Missouri also lost their next two games and then another one in early November ended any hopes they had of coming back in the Big 12 North with three weeks to play trailing NU by two.
So this is one of those games. A loss for either team against a contender from the North really puts one of these teams down two in the standings with seven to play. Not insurmountable, but a tough task the rest of the way. Going back to that Miracle in Missouri, junior quarterback Zac Lee led NU back with three fourth quarter touchdown passes. Now he’s a leader for this team off the field as he has given way to freshmen Taylor Martinez and sophomore Cody Green.
