Construction on a wind farm with 40 towers in Richardson County is beginning, south of Humboldt, Nebraska near the Nebraska-Kansas line.
When finished, Omaha Public Power District will be purchasing power from the project. OPPD Senior Communications Manager Mike Jones says Gestamp Wind North America, based in Houston, Texas, is constructing the wind farm, which will have the capacity to power over 16-thousand homes.
OPPD has a contract to take delivery of 60 megawatts of wind energy from what will be called the Flat Water Wind Farm.
Earlier this year, OPPD approved purchasing up to 40-point-five megawatts of wind energy for 20 years, from a wind farm being built in Boone County, near Petersburg. OPPD has been purchasing 35 megawatts of wind energy from two Nebraska Public Power District Ainsworth and Elkhorn Ridge Wind Farms.
The district has a goal of 400 megawatts of energy from renewable sources, or ten% of its total power by the year 2020.
