Leadership Hastings presented Nebraska athletic director and longtime coaching great Tom Osborne with the inaugural Tom Osborne Leadership Award, during a banquet and ceremony held in Hastings at Lochland Country Club Friday night.
The Tom Osborne Leadership Award will be presented annually to a top leader in Nebraska or a top national leader with ties to Nebraska. It was only fitting that Osborne take the first award in his name. The Hall of Fame coach led the Huskers to three national titles as a head coach. He later served as a U.S. representative from Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District for three terms and returned to athletics at Nebraska in 2007, when Osborne accepted the position of athletic director.
Osborne was joined by his wife Nancy and other family members. A couple of former players were on hand to give speeches and there were videotaped speeches from several sports figures associated with Osborne over the years including coaching greats Lou Holtz and Bobby Bowden as well as current NU coach Bo Pelini and current KU coach Turner Gill.
