Ethan Finlay of the 11th-ranked Creighton men’s soccer team has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his pair of two-goal matches against fifth-ranked Tulsa and Indiana last week. The junior forward now leads the MVC with nine goals and 19 points on the season.
Finlay opened his scoring last week by notching the sixth-fastest goal from the start of a match in school history, finding the back of the net just 41 seconds into Creighton’s match against No. 5 Tulsa last Tuesday. He added another first-half goal, which proved to be the game-winning score, against the Golden Hurricane in the 3-1 Bluejay win.
Against Indiana, the MAC Hermann Trophy candidate had a pair of second-half goals as the Jays played a man-down while attempting to overcome a 2-0 deficit. Finlay cut IU’s lead in half with a goal just 13 seconds into the second half, a blast from 15 yards out, seemingly catching the Hoosiers off guard. His fourth goal of the week came as he headed in a corner kick late in the contest against Indiana.
Finlay’s league-leading nine goals are a career high, topping last season’s eight scores. The preseason All-American now has 23 career goals to rank 10th in school history and his 13 goals and 32 points at home in his career both rank second in Morrison Stadium history. With three multi-goal matches this year, Finlay now has four in his career to tie for eighth in school history.
The Bluejays (8-2-0, 1-0-0 MVC) return to action at Evansville (4-6-1, 0-1-0 MVC) on Saturday. The preseason Valley favorite Purple Aces host SIU Edwardsville on Wednesday before welcoming the Bluejays in for a 7:30 p.m., kickoff on Saturday night.
